Erik Matthias Freer is a designer, creative director, writer, artist, and educator whose work bridges art, design, architecture, publishing, and technology. He brings over a decade of experience developing typographically precise, research-driven design systems for global brands, cultural institutions, and academic organizations.
From 2017–2022, he served as Design Director at Neue Galerie New York, where he led creative direction across the museum’s channels and collaborated closely with curators, artists, and institutional leadership.
Through his independent practice, Freer Studio, Erik provides creative direction and design across identity, editorial, motion, exhibition, publication, and environmental work for clients in the arts, academia, and the private sector.
His work has earned an Emmy nomination and has been featured in The New York Times, Vogue, The Wall Street Journal, and Financial Times.
Erik is a term-appointed part-time faculty member at The New School. He holds an MFA in Graphic Design from the Yale School of Art, a BFA from Parsons School of Design, and a BA in Literary Studies from Eugene Lang College.
